Shipping the Bikes

Shipping the Bikes

The date draws nearer, so on Sunday the 15th of Oct (2023) we went on the scenic road from Munich to Hamburg. Being greeted with one short rainshower the overall trip was a good test of our gear, as the temperatures dropped below 10°C and at least in the morning there was fog as well.
The gear held. Patagonia should not be a temperature issue, Alaska and Canada remains to be seen.

The thing i like most about riding a motorcycle is my personal mindset change as reaching my destination becomes secondary. The most important part is the road ahead in the general direction of the destination.
So on this trip we passed through various different regions, Upper Bavaria, Hohenlohe, Spessart, to name just a few. Always searching for the smallest road possible. Judging by the tracks we were rather successful. Did find some dirt roads as well but all in all only about 5km, better then nothing though.
We only stopped at two tourist attractions, the Eder Talsperre and the Steinhuder Meer, for the rest of the time we enjoyed the sun breaking the fog and the autumn colored trees.

For the first three days it felt like one of our usual motorcycle tours, just enjoy the scenery the riding and from time to time complain about cold fingers. But as soon as the Hamburg outskirts came into view a feeling of “yeah this is happening” started to sink in.
Stefan even mentioned there is still time to call all of it off. We did not. On Thursday morning we rode our bikes to the shipment point and hope that they will be in Valparaiso once we get there. Strange feeling to put your belongings in a suitcase, leave that thing open and hand it off.

Getting from the harbor back into the city was a little walk as public transportation there is as scarce as it is in German countryside, like three times a day. Anyway found a ferry and enjoyed a fish sandwich and a beer with perfect Hamburg weather (rain and wind).

On our way back now to finish our preparations, pack, repack, throw things out, pack again, repack and repeat. Getting our affairs in order will be one thing that needs to be done as well, and at least I have been putting that one off for quite some time now.

Till next time, happy hacking everyone …
