Panamerican Highway – week #38 – human and bike service in Alaska
[14/08/2024 – 21/08/2024[
Our Last Week – Whenever You Read IT
So the last thing we did on Tuesday was to put up our tent and have some dinner at the Rock River Campground. Fighting off some Mosquitos, enjoying the sunset, and then turn in for an early night. The next morning started quite early and rather cold with 1°C according to Stefan. Sadly this particular night got him a cold. Obviously his mood was not on an all time high, and even though we had marvelous weather during the day, we decided to go all the way to Dawson City, for two nights before moving on towards Alaska. The cold was not gone by then but oh well, we had planned 4 nights in Fairbanks anyway, as our bikes need servicing and we made an appointment for Monday. So while the bikes are being serviced, let´s service Stefan as well, and hope that his cold will go away.

The last day on the Dempster highway, was yet another wonderful ride, especially the part around Tombstone was quite impressive. Same goes for the “Top of the world highway” towards Alaska.
At the Little Gold Creek Border Crossing, one of the agents mentioned, that Alaska is being “invaded” by Germans, as that week alone they had ~200 Germans at that crossing already. He even gave us the official stamp of the border crossing as “You guys do travel a lot”, and they are the only U.S. border crossing that still stamps passports.
Dawson City is at the confluence of Yukon and Klondike, and while it has been the Yukon Territory capital in the past, meanwhile it is a city that largely lives of the Gold Rush history with a lot of tourists, while still a few gold mines are being actively exploited.
And that already concludes this week, as from Saturday to Wednesday we stayed in Fairbanks, with Stefan not really venturing outside the apartment we rented, and me only going for a few walks. It is the first time we have separated bedrooms since Chihuahua (where I slept in the kitchen 🙂 ) and that is a good thing, our conversation was put to a minimum. A little bit of alone time is actually something I had longed for, for quite some time. Eight months of travelling with mostly being together 24/7 is a little from 0 -100 for the both of us I guess. And even though we had this in the past every once in a blue moon, the last time has been a while back.
Just payed the bikes, and now need to go collect them. After that it is about 5´3XX km towards Yellowstone, and then another 6´XXX km towards New York. The Visa and ESTA topic is settled for the time being, as the border agent in Alaska, told us that we can now stay in the U.S. until the 13th of Nov. which is exactly the time frame we need to finish the trip, without the need of hurrying too much. Now we only need decent weather :-).
And now the bikes are back with us, ready for the last leg of the trip.

Wednesday: Rock River Campground – Dawson City
Beautiful but cold morning, and while Stefan still thought about camping before getting to Dawson City, during the day, and his deteriorating conditions, we decided to ride till Dawson and stay there for two nights.
Thursday: Dawson City
Blogging, Running and relaxing and bike cleaning, as they were still dirty from the 1st day on the dempster highway.
Friday: Dawson City (Canada) – Tok (Alaska)
Top of the world highway, cool name for a road, and the landscape does support the naming. Since we have entered North America, border crossing have lost quite a lot of worrying, as they are smooth and without any problems, and you do not spend a minimum of 60 minutes with the different stations we had to go through in South and Central America.
Saturday: Tok – Fairbanks
Back on the Alaska highway, and I have to admit i was a bit annoyed, as there is so much beautiful landscape, but for the most part it hides behind trees, and you only get glimpses of the mountains. The highway itself is basically one long straight.
Sunday – Wednesday: Fairbanks
Doing nothing, really nothing.
This concludes week #38
Until next time,
Happy Hacking everyone
