Panamerican Highway – week #17 – the group got bigger
[20/03/2024 – 27/03/2024[
Intro
Tax the rich. Yes I am fully aware that I am one of them, when it comes to income. I am talking about the whole lot, income, assets and inheritance. Wealth is not evenly distributed, and that is ok. There will always be people that have more then others. Everybody defines wealth in a different way, a consensus however should be the base amount of money that is needed to not worry about the money running out by mid of the month.
In addition, how can it be that certain people that are seen to be rich do get bankrupt like people not in that wealth region. Lets get rid of all the loopholes.
While travelling, my head went back to that topic as poverty is more apparent then at home. Don´t get me wrong, you can see poverty in Munich, you do not have to go search for it, but I guess you grow accustomed to it, or you are occupied with your personal problems, that you just filter it out (or maybe just I did). Anyway we need to come up with a better system to support people with lesser opportunities, and given current discussions in Germany about the welfare system (Bürgergeld), unconditional basic income might be needed, even if it means that a lot of people say, hey that is enough for me I ll put my feet up and do nothing … NO THING. So yes tax the rich, do not build up bureaucracy. And in my opinion it is not enough if the wealthy distribute money through their foundations, as most of the times, this is just a tax-evasion scheme under the disguise of being philanthropic. The only way the money should be distributed is via society aka. the government, it needs to be efficient and it needs to be forward-thinking (whatever forward thinking we as society agreed upon through our votes). Just a brain fart of mine, yet again you might think, but oh well. Luckily, since last Tuesday our two person group grew to a five person group, so my brain farts to have a bigger corrective.
One last thing, the topic quickly raises the temperature of discussion, even within our small group ;-). Most probably there is no right way of doing it, but it as well should not stay the way it is currently (speaking of Germany).
Medellin
After the first night, and still jet lagged, we took the ladies downtown and gave them the first impression of Medellin. For the evenings entertainment we stayed in El Poblado. The next day we went to Comuna 13 and participated in a free walking tour around the place. The free walking tour was really good, as it gave a lot of background information about the place and its difficult history. For dinner we went to Alambique, which is a very good restaurant, with really good food and drinks.
Medellin – Guatape
The next stop was Guatape, we stayed a bit outside at Hotel Porto Marina. The ride itself was easy and the hotel really nice. We went to Piedra de Guatape/Penol. and later on into Guatape itself. Lovely little tourist town. Getting back to the hotel was the first TukTuk ride of our trip. The first time we saw them was down at the border Bolivia – Peru, but it took us some time to finally utilize them.
Guatape – Manizales
A longer ride to get to Manizales, the ladies went with the same driver who took them to Guatape, and reached our hotel much much earlier than Stefan and myself. It should have taken us about 5 hours to reach there, but due to a navigational mishap we spent about an hour to turn our bikes around on a pathway that would have been a lot of fun with the mountain bike, but not with the motorcycles, at least not with our luggage and current skill set. Another hour to get back to the proper road, and then the last 150km to our destination.
In Manizales, we did not do much except discovering the city and then plan our further on trip. Some blogging commenced and a lot of chilling.
Planning with a group of five and different modes of transportation takes a bit longer then planning for a group of 2 with the same mode of transportation.
Currently, I am trying to organize our 30´000 km service, and it seems that we might as well need new chains on the motorcycles. This does get a bit further complicated by the fact, that we will have a date to fly the motorcycles to Panama, on the 15th of April. We do not have a lot of time to get them serviced and the availability of parts seems to be a challenge.

And this concludes week #17.
Till next time,
Happy Hacking everyone
